Ballon d’Or 2026: Yamal, Mbappe and Why We Will Not Be Staking On It

The 2026 Ballon d’Or is awarded in Paris on 26 October, and the two clear front-runners have spent September making their own cases in public. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup and La Liga this year. Kylian Mbappe won nothing, and became the World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer while finishing as top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League. Behind them sit Fabian Ruiz, the only shortlisted player to have won both the Champions League and the World Cup in 2026, and Harry Kane, who scored 73 goals. We have a view on who wins. We are not staking anything on it, and the second half of this article explains why that is not a cop-out.

The four who can actually win it

Player Club The case for The case against
Lamine Yamal Barcelona World Cup and La Liga in the same calendar year. The trophy case argument is the strongest one available. Youth has historically counted against candidates, fairly or not.
Kylian Mbappe Real Madrid All-time leading World Cup goalscorer on 22, with 10 at this tournament. Golden Boots in La Liga and the Champions League. No trophies in 2026. The award has rarely gone to a player whose team won nothing.
Fabian Ruiz Paris Saint-Germain The only shortlisted player to win both the Champions League and the World Cup this year. A controlling midfielder in an award that rewards goals and highlight reels.
Harry Kane Bayern Munich 73 goals, a domestic double, and England third at the World Cup. Third place at a World Cup is not a narrative. He has also barely campaigned.

The quotes tell you how open this has become. Yamal has said that for him, he and Mbappe are the two best players in the world. Mbappe, asked who he was voting for, answered: myself. Players do not usually talk like this about the Ballon d’Or, and the fact that two of them are doing it in the same month is the clearest signal available that nobody inside the game thinks this one is settled.

PSG are the complicating factor. They have a record ten nominees and have declined to endorse a single one of them, while making it clear they believe the winner should come from their squad. Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are in that group alongside Ruiz. A club with ten candidates and no favourite is a club that splits its own vote, which is the most plausible route to a Yamal or Mbappe win even if the collective case for PSG is the strongest of any side.

The trophies versus numbers argument, in one table

This is the actual disagreement, stripped of the noise. Two competing definitions of a great year.

Definition Who it favours Historical record
Won the biggest trophies Yamal, Ruiz The voting body has leaned this way for most of the last decade
Was the best individual player Mbappe, Kane Wins occasionally, usually when no single team dominated

In a World Cup year the first definition normally wins, and that is the honest reading here. If we had to name one, it is Yamal, and it is not especially close on the trophy argument. But naming one and backing one with money are two different acts, which brings us to the part of this article that actually belongs on a predictions site.

Why we do not publish a pick on this

Our record is 79 wins from 134 graded picks, 59%. Every one of those picks was on a football match. Not one was on an award, and there is a structural reason for that rather than a lack of interest.

A match is played. An award is voted. Those are different objects and they fail in different ways.

A football match A voted award
What decides it Ninety minutes on a pitch A jury filling in ballots weeks beforehand
Can you model it Yes. Form, squads, venue, rest, injuries. Not meaningfully. You are modelling opinions, not performances.
When is it actually decided At full time Possibly weeks before the ceremony, invisibly
What moves the price Team news and money Leaks, campaigning and press narrative
Our track record 134 graded picks Zero

That last row is the whole answer. We have no evidence about our own accuracy on award markets, because we have never graded one. Publishing a confident percentage next to something we have never been measured on would be exactly the behaviour this site exists to argue against.

The number that should make you cautiousOur close-call band, picks under 55% confidence, has returned 27 wins and 35 losses. That is 44%, on matches we could actually model. An award vote is less knowable than any match in that band, and anyone offering you a confident Ballon d’Or tip is selling certainty they cannot have earned.

What this round of football actually decides

Very little for the Ballon d’Or, as it happens. Ballots for an October ceremony are shaped by a season that finished months ago, not by an AFCON qualifier or a Nations League group game. If you are watching this week hoping to see a candidate make a late case, the calendar is against them.

What this week does decide is rather more immediate for a South African audience: whether Bafana Bafana start their AFCON 2027 campaign with three points at Orlando Stadium. That one we have modelled, we have published a confidence level on it, and we will grade it in public on Sunday whichever way it goes. The full preview is in Bafana Bafana fixtures and our Guinea prediction, and every other fixture on during the break, with all 34 of our picks, is in the international break fixtures guide.

Our call, for the record

Yamal, on the trophy argument, with PSG’s ten nominees splitting the vote that might otherwise have gone to Ruiz or Dembele. We are writing that down so it can be checked against the result on 26 October, which is the same standard we hold ourselves to on every match we call. It carries no confidence percentage and it is not a betting tip, because we have nothing in our record that would justify attaching a number to it.
