Mamelodi Sundowns are 1st in the Betway Premiership standings on 20 points from 8 games: 6 wins, 2 draws and no defeats, with 19 goals scored and 7 conceded. Orlando Pirates are 2nd on 19 points but have played one game fewer, so the lead is one point and not a game. Sundowns are the only unbeaten side with eight games played. Their next league game is away to Richards Bay on Tuesday 13 October 2026 at 19:30 SAST, where our published pick is Sundowns at 76 percent, a strong-band call that will be graded in public like every pick we have made.
The Betway Premiership log, with Sundowns on top
The full table below comes from the ESPN South African Premiership standings, read this morning with a cache-busting request. We check it arithmetically before publishing: wins across the division total 34 and losses total 34, the drawn column totals 46 for 23 drawn matches, 34 plus 23 is 57 matches, and goals for and goals against both total 130. For every club, wins plus draws plus losses equals games played and three times wins plus draws equals points. Points per game and the 30-game projection are our own arithmetic.
| Pos | Club | P | W-D-L | Pts | Points per game | 30-game pace | Behind Sundowns |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mamelodi Sundowns | 8 | 6-2-0 | 20 | 2.50 | 75.0 | Leaders |
| 2 | Orlando Pirates | 7 | 6-1-0 | 19 | 2.71 | 81.4 | 1 pt |
| 3 | AmaZulu | 7 | 5-1-1 | 16 | 2.29 | 68.6 | 4 pts |
| 4 | Kaizer Chiefs | 7 | 3-4-0 | 13 | 1.86 | 55.7 | 7 pts |
| 5 | Milford | 8 | 3-3-2 | 12 | 1.50 | 45.0 | 8 pts |
| 6 | Sekhukhune United | 7 | 3-2-2 | 11 | 1.57 | 47.1 | 9 pts |
| 7 | Stellenbosch | 7 | 2-3-2 | 9 | 1.29 | 38.6 | 11 pts |
| 8 | Golden Arrows | 7 | 1-5-1 | 8 | 1.14 | 34.3 | 12 pts |
| 9 | Chippa United | 7 | 1-5-1 | 8 | 1.14 | 34.3 | 12 pts |
| 10 | Durban City | 7 | 1-4-2 | 7 | 1.00 | 30.0 | 13 pts |
| 11 | Polokwane City | 7 | 1-4-2 | 7 | 1.00 | 30.0 | 13 pts |
| 12 | TS Galaxy | 7 | 1-3-3 | 6 | 0.86 | 25.7 | 14 pts |
| 13 | Kruger United | 7 | 1-1-5 | 4 | 0.57 | 17.1 | 16 pts |
| 14 | Richards Bay | 7 | 0-3-4 | 3 | 0.43 | 12.9 | 17 pts |
| 15 | Siwelele | 7 | 0-3-4 | 3 | 0.43 | 12.9 | 17 pts |
| 16 | Marumo Gallants | 7 | 0-2-5 | 2 | 0.29 | 8.6 | 18 pts |
The league runs to 30 games for each of the 16 clubs, 240 matches in all, so Sundowns have played just over a quarter of their season. The pace column is a straight-line projection of points per game and nothing more. It is there to show scale, not to forecast a final table.
The lead is one point. At equal games it is zero
This is the first of two original datasets on this page. Sundowns and Milford have played eight league games and everyone else has played seven, so the raw table flatters the two clubs with an extra fixture. Strip Sundowns back to their first seven games, which ended with the 3-0 home win over Siwelele on 9 September, and compare like with like.
| After 7 games | W-D-L | Pts | Scored | Conceded | Goal difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mamelodi Sundowns | 6-1-0 | 19 | 18 | 6 | +12 |
| Orlando Pirates | 6-1-0 | 19 | 16 | 1 | +15 |
| Difference | Identical | Level | Sundowns +2 | Pirates 5 fewer | Pirates +3 |
At the same stage the two clubs have identical records, six wins and one draw, and Pirates sit three goals better off because of a defence that has conceded once all season. Sundowns’ eighth game, the 1-1 draw at Chippa United on 12 September, is the whole of the current lead. That does not make the lead fake. Points banked count, and Pirates still have to win a game to turn their game in hand into anything. It does mean the most accurate description of this title race on 6 October is level, not Sundowns ahead.
Who Sundowns dropped points against
The second original dataset. We split the eight league results by where each opponent sits in the log today, positions 2 to 8 against positions 9 to 16. Every scoreline is from the ESPN club schedule for Sundowns, checked this morning, and the eight results add up to exactly 20 points, 19 scored and 7 conceded, matching the table above.
| Date | Match | Score | Opponent now | Result | Running points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tue 11 Aug | TS Galaxy v Mamelodi Sundowns | 2-3 | 12th | WIN | 3 |
| Sat 15 Aug | Kaizer Chiefs v Mamelodi Sundowns | 1-1 | 4th | DRAW | 4 |
| Wed 19 Aug | Mamelodi Sundowns v Marumo Gallants | 2-0 | 16th | WIN | 7 |
| Wed 26 Aug | Mamelodi Sundowns v AmaZulu | 5-2 | 3rd | WIN | 10 |
| Wed 2 Sep | Mamelodi Sundowns v Milford | 2-0 | 5th | WIN | 13 |
| Sun 6 Sep | Golden Arrows v Mamelodi Sundowns | 1-2 | 8th | WIN | 16 |
| Wed 9 Sep | Mamelodi Sundowns v Siwelele | 3-0 | 15th | WIN | 19 |
| Sat 12 Sep | Chippa United v Mamelodi Sundowns | 1-1 | 9th | DRAW | 20 |
| Opponents | Played | W-D-L | Points | Points per game | Scored | Conceded |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clubs now 2nd to 8th | 4 | 3-1-0 | 10 | 2.50 | 10 | 4 |
| Clubs now 9th to 16th | 4 | 3-1-0 | 10 | 2.50 | 9 | 3 |
| All league games | 8 | 6-2-0 | 20 | 2.50 | 19 | 7 |
The two halves come out identical: ten points from four games against the top half and ten points from four against the bottom half. Sundowns have not yet shown the usual pattern of a leader that racks up points against weak sides and splits them with strong ones. The draw at Kaizer Chiefs was against a side now 4th. The draw at Chippa United was against a side now 9th that has drawn five of its seven games. Both dropped points came away from home, and the four home games at Loftus have all been won.
What this does not show is that Sundowns have not yet played Orlando Pirates in the league, and that is the only fixture that can settle the comparison in the previous section.
Next fixtures, with our published picks
League dates and venues are from the SuperSport Betway Premiership fixture list and the ESPN feed, which agree on every row below. SuperSport prints league times with no timezone label and ESPN labels the same clock values as UTC, so the bare 17:30 for Richards Bay is 19:30 South African time and the bare 13:30 for Durban City is 15:30. The MTN8 final date, venue and 18:00 kick-off are from the Briefly and Time Out Durban reports. For the CAF Champions League tie, the confederation has confirmed only a 16 to 18 October window for the first leg, and beIN Sports lists the return at Loftus Versfeld on 23 October without a confirmed South African kick-off time, so that is all we publish.
| Date | Competition | Fixture | Kick-off SAST | Venue | Our pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sat 10 Oct 2026 | MTN8 final | Orlando Pirates v Mamelodi Sundowns | 18:00 | Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban | Pirates to lift it, 53%, close |
| Tue 13 Oct 2026 | Betway Premiership | Richards Bay v Mamelodi Sundowns | 19:30 | Princess Magogo Stadium | Sundowns win, 76%, strong |
| 16 to 18 Oct 2026 | CAF Champions League, first leg | Wiliete v Mamelodi Sundowns | Not confirmed | Angola | Sundowns win, 58%, good |
| Fri 23 Oct 2026 | CAF Champions League, second leg | Mamelodi Sundowns v Wiliete | Not confirmed | Loftus Versfeld Stadium | Sundowns win, 80%, strong |
| Sun 1 Nov 2026 | Betway Premiership | Mamelodi Sundowns v Durban City | 15:30 | Loftus Versfeld Stadium | Sundowns win, 79%, strong |
Every figure in that column is reproduced exactly from the Sundowns fixtures page and the match previews, so no two pages on this site carry different numbers for the same game. Sundowns have no league fixture in the 31 October round. The 4 November midweek round, in which Sundowns are not involved, is shown as postponed on the SuperSport list and as scheduled on ESPN, and we have not resolved that disagreement.
Our record on Sundowns, losses included
Read off the live public pick log on our home page this morning. We have graded three picks on Sundowns league matches and all three won: Sundowns at 68 percent against AmaZulu (5-2), at 72 percent against Milford (2-0) and at 60 percent away at Golden Arrows (1-2). Three from three is a sample, not a hit rate, and we will not quote it as one.
| Measure | Record | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| Every graded pick since 4 August 2026 | 109 wins, 77 losses, 186 picks | 59% |
| Strong band, 70 percent and above | 25 wins, 5 losses, 30 picks | 83% |
| Betway Premiership picks | 6 wins, 7 losses, 13 picks | 46% |
| Betway Premiership picks on Sundowns matches | 3 wins, 0 losses | Sample, not a rate |
| Betway Premiership picks on all other matches | 3 wins, 7 losses | 30% |
That last row is the uncomfortable one and it belongs on this page. Outside Sundowns games our Betway Premiership picks have won three of ten. Six of the seven losses were draws (four of them goalless), which our rules grade as a loss whenever we picked a winner, and the seventh was Golden Arrows beating Stellenbosch 1-0 when we had backed Stellenbosch at 45 percent. A league where 40 percent of matches finish level is hard on anyone who has to name a winner, and our column shows it.
