Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns is the 2026 MTN8 final, and it kicks off at 18:00 SAST on Saturday 10 October 2026 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Our published pick is Orlando Pirates at 53 percent, a close call rather than a confident one. It is deliberately against the club sitting top of the Betway Premiership log, because Pirates hold the better points-per-game figure, 2.71 against 2.50, and because Sundowns needed the away-goals rule to get here while Pirates won their semi-final 4-0 on aggregate. Both clubs are unbeaten in the league. This is the first MTN8 pick this site has ever published, so that column of our record starts at zero.

The fixture, confirmed twice

The venue was the missing piece until last week. When we built our Mamelodi Sundowns hub on 25 September the final had a confirmed date and two confirmed teams but no venue and no kick-off time, so we published those cells blank rather than guess. The league announced the venue on 28 September and two South African outlets carry the same details.

How both sides reached the final

The two routes could not have been less alike, and that contrast is most of the reason our number leans to the side in second place. Both aggregates below were confirmed on 29 September 2026 against a match report that covers the two semi-finals together.

• Orlando Pirates 4-0 Sekhukhune United on aggregate. A 1-0 win away in Polokwane, then 3-0 at home. No goals conceded across the tie, and a fifth consecutive MTN8 final.
• Mamelodi Sundowns 3-3 Golden Arrows on aggregate, through on away goals. Arrows won the first leg 1-0 at Lucas Moripe Stadium through Junior Dion. Sundowns then won 3-2 in Durban through Cassius Mailula, Marcelo Allende and Antonio van Wyk. They did not win the tie, they survived it.

Both finalists are unbeaten, and only one of them is comfortable

The Betway Premiership has been paused since 20 September for the FIFA international window, so the log below is the one both clubs carry into the final. The rows were read from the ESPN South African Premiership standings on 29 September 2026 and are identical to the readings we took on 23, 24, 25, 27 and 28 September. Points per game is our own calculation. We do not publish goals for, goals against or goal difference from these feeds, because our sources disagree on them.

Sundowns lead the table on points with a game more played. Pirates lead it on rate. Neither has lost a league match, which in a sixteen-club division after eight rounds is already unusual: they are two of the three unbeaten clubs left, and Kaizer Chiefs are the third.

The original number: win rate against draw rate in the top six

A league table rewards not losing. A cup final does not. So we took the top six clubs and split their results into the share of matches won and the share drawn, because a side that draws its way up the table is a different proposition in a one-off match. Every figure below is computed from the verified log rows above.

Orlando Pirates have the highest win rate in the division, 85.7 percent, from the fewest matches played among the top two. That single column is the clearest statement of why our pick is the club in second place. Kaizer Chiefs are the counter-example in the same table: unbeaten, fourth, and winning fewer than half their matches.

The second original number: what happens when these two play anyone

Put the two finalists together and their league season so far is fifteen matches. Twelve of those fifteen ended in a win for them and three ended level. Neither club has been beaten. Against that, the division as a whole has drawn 23 of its 57 completed matches, a 40.4 percent draw rate that we first computed on our log hub and have rechecked on every reading since.

So both finalists are roughly half as likely to draw as the average Betway Premiership club. That cuts two ways on 10 October. It supports the idea that somebody wins this final inside ninety minutes. It also means neither side has much recent practice at the grinding, level, nothing-happening kind of match that finals often become.

Sundowns also have a CAF Champions League tie against Wiliete of Angola inside the 16 to 25 October window, which is why they have no league fixture on 31 October or 4 November.
