Scotland 1-2 Slovenia: Pocognoli still waiting for a home win

Scotland went into this one on the back of Sébastien Pocognoli’s first win in charge, away to North Macedonia, and started well. Ryan Christie put them ahead in the 31st minute, and early in the second half Christie was played through again by Gannon Doak, only to shoot straight at Jan Oblak.

That was the turning point. Slovenia levelled just before the hour, Aljoša Matko taking Danijel Sturm’s pass and squeezing a left-footed shot past Angus Gunn. Matko then had a second goal ruled out for offside, but Slovenia kept finding space behind the Scotland defence and went on to win it. Pocognoli handed Hearts winger Josh McPake his international debut as he chased the game, but Scotland never got back on top.

Andy Robertson admitted afterwards that Scotland were not good enough and were outfought. The numbers are uncomfortable: Pocognoli is the first Scotland manager since Berti Vogts in 2002 to lose his first two home games, and Scotland have now lost three of their last four at Hampden. They sit third in Group B1, three points behind Slovenia.

Switzerland 3-0 North Macedonia

The other Group B1 game went exactly to script. Switzerland’s 3-0 win keeps their record perfect after four games and leaves them five points clear at the top, with Scotland’s visit in November the main obstacle left.

League C: a record goal and a six-point lead

Belarus 1-0 Finland

Belarus’s Artem Shumanski scored after ten seconds, the fastest goal in Nations League history, and it turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Albania 2-1 San Marino

Albania needed an added-time penalty from Kristjan Asllani to get past San Marino, but the three points take them to the top of Group C1.

Moldova 0-4 Slovakia

The most one-sided score of the night. Slovakia’s 4-0 win away from home puts them six points clear in Group C3 with two games to play.

Kazakhstan 2-2 Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands have now drawn all four of their games in this campaign, and this one finished level again at 2-2. Kazakhstan are still without a win in the group.

Estonia 0-0 Iceland and Luxembourg 0-2 Bulgaria

Group C4 produced the night’s only goalless draw in Tallinn, while Bulgaria won 2-0 away in Luxembourg.

What to watch in NovemberMatchdays 5 and 6 run from 12 to 17 November. The standout is Switzerland v Scotland, where Scotland need a result against the group’s runaway leaders, and Spain v England on 15 November, which should decide who wins League A Group 3. We will preview the key games with market odds closer to the time. If you want to follow the prices in the meantime, they are on Hollywoodbets (18+, bet responsibly).
