Handicap meaning, in one line: a handicap gives one team a head start in goals before the match begins, and your bet is settled on the score after that head start is added. If you back a team at minus one, it has to win by two clear goals for a full win. If you back a team at plus one, it can draw, or even win, and still win you the bet. We tested both against 178 football picks from our own graded record, losses included, and the result is blunt: a minus-one handicap kept 22 of our 24 winning strong picks, but only 14 of our 36 winning close calls.

What does handicap mean in betting?

A normal match bet, the 1X2 market, settles on the real final score. A handicap bet changes the starting score on paper. The stronger side is given a deficit, written as a minus figure, and the weaker side is given a head start, written as a plus figure. The Soccerway betting guide, last updated 8 June 2026, describes it as giving the favourite a one-goal disadvantage and the underdog a one-goal head start. Nothing about the match itself changes. Only the way your ticket is settled changes.

The reason the market exists is price. When a big favourite plays a weak side, the plain win pays very little. Giving the favourite a minus handicap makes the bet harder to win, so the bookmaker pays more for it. Giving the underdog a plus handicap makes the bet easier to win, so it pays less. Every handicap is a trade between how often a bet wins and how much it pays, and our odds explained guide shows how to turn any of those prices into the probability it implies.

Settled score = real score + handicap goals

The two kinds of handicap: European and Asian

A European handicap, also called a three-way handicap, has three outcomes, just like a normal match bet: the home side wins on the adjusted score, the away side wins, or the adjusted score is level, which is called a handicap draw. The Soccerway guide is clear that on this market a handicap draw is its own result and your stake on either team is not refunded.

An Asian handicap removes the draw. It has only two outcomes, and some lines refund your stake when the adjusted score is level. A whole-number line such as minus one refunds the stake if the team wins by exactly one goal. A half line such as minus one and a half can never be level, so it always wins or loses. A quarter line splits your stake across the two lines next to it. A zero line is the same bet as draw no bet: your team must win, and a draw returns your stake. A plus-half line on a team is the same bet as double chance on that team to win or draw.

Handicap 0:2 meaning, and why you must check the bet slip

Many bookmakers used in South Africa and Nigeria write handicaps as two numbers with a colon, such as 0:1, 0:2 or 1:0. The two numbers are a starting score. Handicap 0:2 means that one team begins the match two goals ahead on paper, and the bet settles on the real score with those two goals added. The trap is that bookmakers and the guides that explain them do not all attach the numbers to the same team in the same order, and we found explainers that contradict themselves on the point. So do not guess. Open the market, check which team name the head start sits beside, and if the slip does not make it obvious, check the bookmaker’s own betting rules before you stake anything.

Here is how one fixture settles under 0:2 depending on which side holds the two-goal start. The home team is listed first in every score.

The same 2-0 result is a handicap draw on one reading and a comfortable home win on the other. That is the whole reason to read the slip.

Our own record, re-settled at a handicap

This is the part of the page you will not find elsewhere. Every pick we publish backs a team to win, and every one is graded in public on our homepage. On 10 October 2026 we read the live log with a cache-busting request: 109 wins and 78 losses from 187 graded picks, 58 percent, with our strong band, picks rated 70 percent or higher, on 25 of 30, 83 percent. Those totals include a handful of NFL, UFC and tennis picks. For this test we kept only the football picks with a published final score, which leaves 178 picks. One more football win, Mali against Cape Verde, is left out because our own log records that sources disagree on the score.

For each of the 178 we took the final score from the side we backed and sorted it by margin. Draws count as losses on our record, because we backed a winner, and they stay losses here.

Confidence band Picks Lost by 2+ Lost by 1 Drew Won by 1 Won by 2+
Strong, 70% and above 28 1 0 3 2 22
Good, 55% to 69% 70 4 9 13 19 25
Close, under 55% 80 7 11 26 22 14
All football picks 178 12 20 42 43 61

Now the same 178 picks settled four ways. The plain win is our real graded result. The other three columns are what the same tickets would have done on a handicap line.

What the numbers say

  • A minus handicap only suits picks that win comfortably. Moving our strong picks from a plain win to minus one cost 2 of their 24 winners. Moving our close calls cost 22 of their 36 winners, 61 percent of them, because most of our close calls that won did so by a single goal.
  • The plus handicap is mostly a draw cover. Plus one won 146 tickets: our 104 winners plus the 42 picks that drew. The 20 one-goal defeats became handicap draws, which still lose on a European line, and the 12 heavier defeats lost outright.
  • Higher hit rate does not mean profit. Plus one won 82 percent of the time, but plus-handicap prices are short for exactly that reason. We did not record handicap prices for these picks, so this table tells you how often each line would have landed, not whether it would have made money.
The honest versionA handicap is not a smarter bet or a safer bet. It is the same match priced a different way. Our own record shows the minus line belongs only on picks the model expects to win by a distance, and even then 28 strong picks is a small sample. No line on this page is certain, and a plus handicap that wins 82 percent of the time can still lose money if the price is too short. Treat every pick, ours included, as a probability rather than a promise.

Common handicap mistakes

  • Reading the colon the wrong way round. A 0:2 line on the wrong team turns a comfortable winner into a losing ticket. Check the team name on the slip.
  • Treating a handicap draw as a refund. On a European line it is a separate outcome, and both team bets lose.
  • Putting minus lines on close calls. Our close calls that won mostly won by one goal, which a minus one line does not pay.
  • Stacking handicaps in accumulators. Each leg is still a probability below 100 percent, and the legs multiply. Our honest page on 100 sure predictions shows how fast accumulators collapse.
